The Federal Government on Friday in Abuja raised the alarm over the high rate of cancer-related deaths, with a declaration that except stringent measures were put in place, 84 million persons would have been killed by 2020.

Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, said this at a news briefing ahead of this year’s celebration of World Cancer Day with the theme: ‘Together it is possible.’

He stated that $9m counterpart funding had been paid by the government in its collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency for the treatment of the disease.

In order to unite the world in the fight against the cancer, the United Nations set aside Feb 4 (today) every year to mark the World Cancer Day.

He said, “For emphasis, we need to remind ourselves of the grim statistics of the morbidity arising from the cancer scourge. One in every two men and one in every three women will have a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime; this is a reality.”
