Five armed robbers who were involved in the invasion of a new generation bank on Oyemekun Road in Akure, the Ondo state capital, last November, have been arrested by the Ondo State police command. Also, the state command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, said three suspected dealers in illegal oil bunkering have been apprehended by the command.

The state Commissioner of Police, Sani Magaji, told journalists in Akure at the weekend that the arrest of the accused was based on intelligence reports received by his command. Magaji said the five armed robbers that included an Evangelist, Wale Aselu invaded the new generation bank on November 22 last year leaving about five person dead and carted away N22 million.

According to the commissioner, another gang of armed robbers that invaded the Ifon branch of an old generation bank on September 27, last year where two people and an inspector of police were killed have also been arrested by the police. Explaining how the five robbers that raided the new generation bank in Akure were apprehended, the police boss said a preconference was done in the evangelist’s church before the operation was carried out by the bandits.

Mogaji confirmed that the suspects, who included Ikechukwu Maduagwu, Fayemi Albert Olabusuyi, Mukaila Raji and Ropo Adeleye, have confessed to the crime. Speaking with journalists, one of the suspects, Ropo Adelelye, said he was not involved in the crime but only helped the robbers in navigating their routes through the state capital and he was subsequently offered a sum of N100, 000 as compensation for showing them the way of escape through Ikogosi in Ekiti State.
